Understand Your Heart: Two Heart Screenings That Could Save Your Life

If you could spend a half hour or an hour getting simple screenings done that could improve your heart health and possibly save your life, would you? February is Heart Awareness Month, so it’s a great time to talk about heart screenings offered at Little Company of Mary Hospital. Eileen McNichols, Manager of Health Promotion Services at Little Company of Mary Hospital, says if you are going to do one thing for your heart this month, you should learn your risk factors for heart disease. “You can’t really know what to do for yourself until you know what your risk factors are. Once you know, you can see what you can do to get any issues under control,” said McNichols.

Fortunately, Little Company of Mary offers two simple screenings that can show you exactly where you stand. The Healthy Heart Screening is a comprehensive screening to identify the risk factors for heart disease and stroke. With this test, you get $750 worth of tests for $60. The Wake Up Call Screening includes all of the tests offered in the Healthy Heart Screening, but also looks more in depth at risk factors for stroke. With this test, you get $3,500 worth of screenings for $150. The screenings do not require a doctor’s order—simply call 708.423.5774 to schedule your appointment.

What exactly will you get out of the screenings?
“Each program offers comprehensive screenings and tests that give an accurate picture of your heart health. And the most wonderful part of the process is that you get the chance to talk with a nurse educator who will explain what the tests are looking for, what your results say and how you can enhance your own well-being,” said McNichols. “So you get a picture of your health and you are empowered to take control of whatever is happening and what you can do to make a difference.” Not only do you get the one-on-one attention with a nurse educator, but medical specialists at Little Company of Mary Hospital interpret your results.

These tests have saved lives. “Every once in a while, our tests reveal a ticking time bomb. Last year, one participant had a life threatening blockage in his carotid artery. He was referred to a vascular surgeon to clear the blockage. A month later, he was ready to go to Florida for the winter,” said McNichols. Read his story.

Who should consider getting these screenings?
McNichols says every adult should know their risk factors for heart disease and these screenings provide a baseline of information about overall health and well-being. Additionally, anyone with a family history of high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart attack or stroke should definitely have a screening. “The test provides information about where you are today and helps to give you an idea of what you can do to decrease your risk for developing cardiovascular disease,” said McNichols.
