Record Breaking Number of Walkers Commemorate 14 Years of Fighting Breast Cancer

Kiwi green with pink accent t-shirts and stylish pink ribbon headbands could be seen in abundance at the 14th annual Beverly Breast Cancer Walk this Mother’s Day, May 12th.  The attendance at this Mother’s Day tradition has grown in leaps and bounds, with more than 14,000 walkers who poured into Ridge Park from all over the Chicagoland area to embark in a three-mile walk through historic Beverly Hills and Morgan Park. The record-breaking turnout was in support of Little Company of Mary’s Comprehensive Breast Health Center.

“Back in 2000, a group of good friends from the Beverly neighborhood decided to do their own walk for breast cancer on Mother’s Day. Fast-forward 14 years later, here we are today with nearly 14,000 walkers and proceeds benefiting comprehensive breast health services that support Chicago’s Southland community,” said Brian Lepacek, MDiv, Executive Director of the LCMH Foundation. The walk’s evolution honors the lively spirit of its participants and shows the commitment to continue battling a disease that has touched so many.”

Stella Nolan-Thompson, a breast cancer survivor, thanks Little Company of Mary Hospital for assisting in her fight against breast cancer. “I have a lot to be thankful this Mother’s Day,” said Stella. “We are here to support those who are fighting the battle right now in their lives and pay tribute to all those who have survived.”

Stella and hundreds of other women found compassionate treatment at Little Company of Mary’s Accredited Comprehensive Breast Health Center. “The Breast Health Center at Little Company of Mary has been recognized as one of the top in the nation due, in huge part, because of each of you and this community, who have supported us for the last 14 years,” said Dr. Nancy Taft, board-certified breast surgeon for Little Company of Mary Hospital. “I hope you never have to see us, but, if you do face breast cancer, we are here to provide ease, comfort, care and state-of-the-art technology through an expert team and a holistic approach to the healing process.”

All proceeds from this year’s event will go toward Little Company of Mary’s Comprehensive Breast Health Center that is located in the Women’s Center for Life and Health.
