More than 175 fabulous woman wearing red entered the Hilton Oak Lawn Hotel to attend Little Company of Mary’s “Celebrate the Heart of Women” event on Sunday, February 15th.The special woman’s event focused on a “Heartfelt Salute” with guest speaker, Dr. Nancy J. Taft, fellowship-trained Breast Surgeon at Little Company of Mary Hospital and Lieutenant Colonel with the United States Army Reserves.
The event began with a beautiful liturgy celebrated by Fr. Benedykt Pazdan, with St. Bernadette Parish in Evergreen Park. Following the mass and brunch, Dr. Taft was escorted in the conference room and was given a military style salute by the Evergreen Park American Legion Post #854. After the salute, Dr. Taft shared a personal glimpse into the life of a Lt. Colonel, Breast Surgeon, woman of faith, mother and wife. Dr. Taft’s emotional presentation on her life’s journey during with deployment, war, medical school, single motherhood and marriage, left all women in the room with tears in their eyes.
“My medical calling began as a registered nurse and a mother battling with my then, five year-old daughter’s rare cancer,” said Dr. Taft. “This life changing event led me to my calling to be a physician. After graduating medical school, I found myself in high debt with student loans.” That is when Dr. Taft decided to enlist herself in the United States Army to help pay this debt; little did she know that 22 days after joining the U.S. Army Reserves, the events of 9/11 would unfold, change the world as we know it and start a war. In 2009, Dr. Taft was deployed to Afghanistan and operated on wounded soldiers and citizens.
After Dr. Taft’s heartfelt presentation, Little Company of Mary’s Vice President of Missions and Spiritualty, Mary Jo Quick, presented Dr. Taft with a “Congratulatory Proclamation” from Representative Kelly Burke, recognizing Dr. Taft for her military services and medical dedication to address women’s health issues. “I’m truly honored that Little Company of Mary went above and beyond to present me with this distinguished honor,” said Dr. Taft.
