In the United States, the number one cause of death is cardiovascular disease including heart attack and stroke. A startling truth about cardiovascular disease is that many people are unaware that they are at serious risk for heart attack and stroke until it is too late. Knowing your risk factors gives you an opportunity to identify your current cardiovascular health and, if necessary, make some important changes in your lifestyle that can decrease these risk factors and help you to live a healthier and more fulfilling life.
Little Company of Mary Health Education Center offers a comprehensive stroke screening called the Wake Up Call Screening every month. This screening includes a coronary risk profile, stroke ultrasound screening, ultrasound for abdominal aortic aneurysm, body composition analysis, heel ultrasound for bone density, and a heart rhythm screening for an irregular heart rhythm known as Atrial Fibrillation (A-Fib). This is a common arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) in people over the age of 50 and is associated with stroke.
Having this screening in a hospital setting is a great advantage. If there are any serious abnormalities identified at the time of the screening, immediate care can be accessed. During the screening process, trained ultrasound technicians, certified phlebotomists, and licensed registered nurses will provide the highest quality care and privacy for each participant. A Community Wellness Nurse Educator will meet with you, review the findings of your screenings and are able to provide you with resources and referrals for follow up care as needed.
The following screening tests are included in the Wake Up Call Screening:
- CBC to check for anemia and infection
- Complete Chemistry Panel to check for diabetes, liver and kidney health
- Cholesterol, Lipids (HDL & LDL), Triglycerides and C Reactive Protein to check your coronary risk profile
- Heel ultrasound for bone density/osteoporosis
- Heart Rhythm screening for A-Fib
Wake Up Call Screenings require no more than an hour and could save your life or the life of a loved one. Everyone over 50 is encouraged to participate in this comprehensive stroke screening program. Wellness nurse educators, a radiologist, and a medical doctor interpret the screenings and results are given to you to share with your doctor within 2 weeks of the screening. No doctor’s order is required.
The Wake Up Call Screening is endorsed by the medical and cardiology staff at Little Company of Mary Hospital. During these difficult economic times, many people are unable to afford the routine medical care that they require. The Wake Up Call Screening provides $2,500 of diagnostic testing for a fee of $145. This is far less than a typical insurance co payment of 20-30%.
Little Company of Mary Hospital ad Health Care Centers is a Certified Primary Stroke Center with a comprehensive program in place to identify and treat individuals who are experiencing a stroke. A major component of being a Certified Primary Stroke Center is providing the community information and treatment to help prevent a stroke from occurring.
We urge you to consider participating in a Wake Up Call Screening. Why wait until it’s too late? Find out your risk factors for stroke and heart attack and learn how to care for yourself and your loved ones to prevent this life threatening disease.
