Every month, we feature a physician as an opportunity for the community to learn more about the great doctors on staff at Little Company of Mary Hospital. This month we had the chance to talk with Dr. M. Bassel Atassi, an Oncologist at Little Company of Mary Hospital (2800 W. 95th Street). Get to know Dr. Atassi, including why he wanted to become a doctor, how he cares for his patients, and even about his two high-energy kids.

What is your philosophy of care?
I love my patients and treat them like they are family members. The treatment for cancer and blood disorders is complicated and is very difficult on the patients and their families. We sit together and discuss the best treatment plan. There is no time limit when I am talking with the patient and family, as I want them to fully understand the management plan and to feel comfortable in my care.
I also strive to keep up-to-date on all new treatment options, techniques, and research in the field of Hematology/Oncology so I can provide the best care to my patients.
Why did you want to become a doctor?
My childhood dream was taking care of sick patients, easing their pain and suffering and finding a cure for cancer. I carried this dream close to my heart and have worked hard to pursue my education and training. With the help, support, and encouragement of my parents, family, and friends, I have successfully achieved my dream of being able to practice medicine and help my patients.
What are your subspecialties and health interests in regard to your patients ?
My greatest interest is in the ability to counsel my patients and their families during a very difficult time in their lives. The ability to practice at Little Company of Mary’s Cancer Center and offer state-of the-art treatment plans to my patients is my greatest interest.
What are your hobbies and interests outside the office?
As the father of two young children, a five-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter, my hobby is playing with my children and spending time together as a family. They have an exceptionally high energy level, and they keep me on my toes…I truly love and enjoy every minute!
I love sports, especially soccer and table tennis. I also play a mean game of chess if you would like to challenge me to a game!
