New studies show bariatric surgery is effective against diabetes
The Little Company of Mary Bariatric Surgery Center hosted a celebration last month to support weight loss with more than 190 attendees who had successfully participated in the comprehensive weight loss program at Little Company of Mary and had each lost an average of 100 pounds or more.
Since the celebration, new research has been published about the effectiveness of bariatric surgery against Type 2 diabetes. Two studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine show that bariatric surgery can not only be effective in weight loss, but also in reversing the signs of diabetes in patients with high blood sugar levels. Both studies found that patients who had one of three bariatric surgeries experienced greater weight loss than those who were given the standard medication, healthy diet and exercise schedule. There are about 200,000 bariatric surgeries performed each year, which are offered to those who have a high body mass index, diabetes or obesity issues.
George Cavelle, a Little Company of Mary Bariatric Surgery Center success story, experienced similar results. He found that the standard medication, diet and exercise was unsuccessful, and he ultimately decided gastric bypass surgery would be the best option to improve his health. Within 2-3 days after his surgery, his blood sugar levels dropped from 350 down to 98, and his diabetes were was gone! Today, George He has lost more than 230 pounds with help from the Little Company of Mary’s weight loss program. He can now enjoy the intangibles in life that those who aren’t overweight take for granted including, going for walks with his wife, playing with his kids, and riding roller coasters.

She is 100% correct. I am 7 years post-RNY and it was so easy once I got past 6 weeks post-op. I exiecrsed daily, faithfully drank my water and followed the plan. I really had no choice. But as time wore on, my pouch could tolerate more (even though I still get dumping syndrome, thankfully). After about 3 years, I hit a plateau and began to gain. I became very conscious of what I was eating again and managed to lose 30 lbs in the past year and am back down to where my lowest was again! The tool makes it a little easier to diet than the normal person this many years out, but not the advantage it was when I was a newbie. My advice is to really avoid your trigger foods at all costs. Don’t look back at them. I won’t even LOOK at a certain ice cream at the store seriously!
