It is normal at an OB/GYN practice to see women in all stages of pregnancy. It is perhaps more rare when two of those women are the ones wearing the white coats. This past Spring, Drs. Pooja Doshi and Alexis Jones, two Little Company of Mary OB/GYNs from the same practice, both had babies of their own. We decided to ask them a few questions about their pregnancy experiences. Here is Dr. Doshi’s interview.
During your pregnancy, did you ever feel nervous or anxious like most pregnant women do?
Thankfully this pregnancy went well overall. Of course there were times I felt nervous, like all pregnant women do. It helps to have my training in OB/GYN for basic knowledge, but when experiencing things yourself, it is different.

What did you enjoy the most about being pregnant?
Feeling the baby’s movements is a very enjoyable feeling.

What pregnancy advice can you give to other pregnant moms?
The best advice is to try to relax about the little things and to listen to your gut. Choose a physician or group that will make you feel comfortable throughout the entire experience.

How did the experience of being pregnant/giving birth affect your perspective as a physician?
Experiencing both yourself makes you know what it is to be pregnant, and gives you the compassion you need to care for other pregnant women. It helps to be able to share knowledge and advice as an OB/GYN, as well as experience.

During your pregnancy, did you ever feel nervous or anxious like most pregnant women do?
I felt nervous, as any mom-to-be would be.

What activities did you incorporate during your pregnancy and why?
I was just as active as I was when I was not pregnant. I did exercise regularly—mainly with swimming and low impact exercising.

What did you enjoy the most about being pregnant?
I enjoyed the quiet moments with my pregnancy, when I could sit and relax and enjoy my baby’s movement.

What pregnancy advice can you give to other pregnant moms?
My advice to moms-to-be is to continue to be active in pregnancy and enjoy the quiet moments, since they are infrequent when the little one arrives. I would also advise to eat healthy foods and know that you really only need an additional 300 calories to the usual 2200 calorie per day diet.

How did the experience of being pregnant/giving birth affect your perspective as a physician?
My experience with all of my pregnancies has allowed me to have a personal, real testimony for pregnant moms. I can often answer questions by saying, “Yes, I know what you are experiencing. I have been there also!”

Every month, we feature a physician as an opportunity for the community to learn more about the great doctors on staff at Little Company of Mary Hospital. This month we had the chance to talk with Dr. Michael Fiorucci, a surgeon at Little Company of Mary Hospital (2800 W. 95th Street). Read on to get to know Dr. Fiorucci, including why he became a doctor, his health interests, and even his outside interests.

Medical School: University of Illinois-Rockford
Residency: Wayne State University
Specialty: General Surgery
Main Interests: Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery, Colon and Rectal Surgery, Endocrine Surgery, Hernia Repair

What is your philosophy of care?
It is my goal to take care of the whole patient. That includes physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I try to treat and talk to every patient as if they were one of my own family members.

Why did you want to become a doctor?
I wanted to be able to help people, and I realized that God had given me the abilities necessary to meet their needs as a physician. Medicine allows me to help the whole person, not just one part.

What are your sub-specialties and health interests in regard to your patients?
I try to help patients understand the importance of preventive care and healthy living. This includes colon and breast cancer screening. I also try to stress the importance of exercise as an overall aide to better living.

How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?
As anyone in medicine will tell you, this is the hardest thing to do. Because of long and unpredictable hours, it is difficult to maintain any given schedule. I do try to schedule regular time off to spend with my family and even some alone time in order to maintain my own being. The time allows me to recharge myself mentally and emotionally. Attending church regularly and spending daily time in prayer helps maintain my spiritual well being.

What are your hobbies and interests outside the office?
I take as much time as possible to spend with my children and attend their many activities. I also enjoy playing golf and softball.

What Is The DAISY Award? – The DAISY Award is an international program that rewards and celebrates the extraordinary clinical skill and compassionate care given by nurses everyday. Little Company of Mary Hospital is proud to be a DAISY Award Partner, recognizing one of our nurses with this special honor every month. These nurses consistently demonstrate excellence through their clinical expertise and especially their extraordinary compassionate care. They are recognized as outstanding role models in our nursing community.

“ When I arrived at LCMH, I was introduced to my nurse- a young woman named Kristina Novak. I am not sure where to start because I was miserable and very crabby from the pain. Kristina started out by introducing herself and her helpers. With a big smile and bright sunny and positive disposition, she went about her job helping me to get comfortable. This young woman, in my opinion, went above and way beyond the call of duty to help me through my ordeal. She constantly came into my room to ask me if I was OK or if I needed anything. I know that is her job, but since I was in pain, I made sure to ask her not be late with my pain medications. She woke me every 4 hours on the dot with a quiet and compassionate “Hi Mr. Hill.” I have had 10 surgeries in my lifetime and I know the difference between GOOD care and GREAT care and Kristina provided GREAT care. ”

The DAISY Foundation was established in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes who died of complications of the auto-immune disease Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura (ITP) at the age of 33. During Pat’s 8 week hospitalization, his family was awestruck by the care and compassion his nurses provided not only to Pat but to everyone in his family. So one of the goals they set in creating a Foundation in Pat’s memory was to recognize extraordinary nurses everywhere who make an enormous difference in the lives of so many people by the super-human work they do everyday.

Kristina was recognized by her department and received: a beautiful certificate, a DAISY Award pin, and a hand-carved stone sculpture entitled A Healer’s Touch. These serpentine stone sculptures are hand-carved for us by artists of the Shona Tribe in Zimbabwe. The sculptures are especially meaningful because of the profound respect the Shona people pay their traditional healers. Shona healers are affectionately regarded as treasures by those they care for, and the well-being and safety of the healer is of community-wide importance. This describes exactly how we and our Hospital Partners feel about nurses! Additionally, everyone in the 4 West celebrated with Cinnabon® cinnamon rolls – a favorite of Patrick’s during his illness. The Barnes Family asks that whenever and wherever nurses smell that wonderful cinnamon aroma, they stop for a moment and think about how special they are.

How Can YOU Nominate An Extradinary Nurse?

It is defined as the intentional self-regulation of attention, a mental focus on a particular aspect of one’s experiences.
The celebration mass was presided by Rev. Benedykt Pazon from St. Bernadette Church located on 9343 S Francisco Avenue in Evergreen Park, IL. Rev. Pazon began the mass with the centenary anniversary celebration of the death of the founder of the Little Company of Mary Sisters, Venerable Mary Potter.

Mary Potter was born in London in 1847. Mary’s compassion for the sick and dying and her vision would change the lives of tens of thousands of people around the world. Her life was marked by frequent illnesses, providing her first hand insight into the loneliness and abandonment world that many of the sick and dying feel. She overcame countless obstacles as she responded to the Holy Spirit and founded a religious congregation devoted to praying for the sick and dying which became known in 1877 as the Little Company of Mary Sisters.

Since Mary’s passing in Rome in 1913, her legacy and wholehearted commitment to God were recognized by Pope John Paul II, when Mary Potter was proclaimed “Venerable” on February 8, 1988. This proclamation demonstrated the Church’s validation of Mary Potter’s saintly life and acceptance of her extensive spiritual writings.

The spiritual heritage of Mary Potter is carried on throughout the world. Today, the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary continue to provide compassionate care for the sick and dying in 11 countries. Their healing touch can be felt in England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Albania, Wales, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Italy, Tonga, and the United States.

Mary Potter’s vision in America became a reality on January 9, 1930 in Evergreen Park, IL, when the Sisters of Little Company of Mary opened a four-story, 150 bed hospital and began caring for the community. Over the next 83 years, the Sisters continued their mission in Evergreen Park caring for the sick and dying by combining state-of-the-art technology, physicians, nurses, staff, and spirituality.

Since opening in 1930 more than 200,000 babies have entered the world- earning the nickname, “The Baby Hospital.” In October 2012, Little Company of Mary made history by opening a state-of-the-art West Pavilion tower to replace the original patient tower built in 1930. The West Pavilion is a 300,000-square-foot, eight-story, 118-private rooms and baths. The West Pavilion is the new home to the Family Birth Center.

“The Sisters of Little Company of Mary built the original tower in 1930 during the great depression-truly a walk of faith, said Mary Jo Quick, R.N., B.S., M.H.A., Vice President, Mission & Spirituality. “Today, Mary’s legacy and vision lives on through the us-the Greater Little Company of Mary.”

The Garden was dedicated in remembrance of babies who have passed away and offers a place for family and friends to grieve and reflect upon the loss. This is the sixth year that the Remembrance Service has been celebrated, with a butterfly release closing the ceremony.

“We felt there was a strong need to find a meaningful way to remember and recognize these precious little ones,” said Mary Grimm, manager of the Family Birth Center. “These remarkable little angels continue to have a profound impact on our lives.”

The sisters of Little Company of Mary generously donated space for the Garden on the East side of their convent. The Garden was created and funded entirely through volunteer efforts from the Perinatal Loss Committee and the Family Birth Center Staff at Little Company of Mary.

If you or someone you know are mourning the loss of a baby, Little Company of Mary’s Perinatal Loss Committee encourages you to reflect at the garden. The garden is located in the east lawn of the Little Company of Mary Sisters’ Convent at 2801 West 93rd Street in Evergreen Park.
